The hammering and chiseling technique in our country originated in the Shang and Zhou dynasties, flourished during the Qin and Han dynasties, and matured during the Tang and Song dynasties
Hammer carving is a traditional technique used in the production and decoration of gold and silver. Hammer carving utilizes the good ductility and curling deformation of metals to manually strike and repeatedly strike gold and silver blanks to create patterns and shapes. The rich texture changes on the surface make the metal break away from its icy texture and add a humanistic temperature.
Li Xiaojian, a native of Fangcheng, Nanyang, was in his teens and worked as a laborer in his uncle's jewelry store to learn technical skills. In 1998, he went to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Yunnan to further his knowledge of gold and silver making techniques. In 2012, he became a disciple of Professor Zhao Jinsheng and devoted himself to learning the skills of gold and silver hammer carving
The art of hammering has existed since the discovery and use of natural gold by humans, but it is limited to making simple small decorative objects or jewelry. The earliest discovered hammer shaped gold jewelry is the scallop shaped gold overlay found by the Zhengzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in the Bai Jia Zhuang aristocratic tomb of the Shang Dynasty. Before the Qin and Han dynasties, the hammering technique was mainly in the form of thin sheets, with decorative forms such as hollowing out, chiseling, or forging. The vast majority of the materials used were single gold, and the individual weight was relatively light. After entering the Han Dynasty, the scope of making tools using the hammering technique expanded.
After several centuries of development, the skills of hammering and chiseling have been greatly enriched, and the production techniques of gold and silver objects have become more and more mature, with increasingly exquisite shapes and patterns. The gold and silver hammer carving technique of the Tang Dynasty presented a more mature and exquisite scene, and the hammer carving vessels developed a unique artistic style with Chinese characteristics. In the inheritance of traditional gold and silver ware making techniques, the hammering and chiseling technique is particularly difficult. It not only involves the learning of pure skills, but also implies a craftsman's artistic cultivation, modeling ability, aesthetics, and many other comprehensive factors. The hammering and chiseling technique involves the three-dimensional and two-dimensional shaping of the object, and the modeling of the hammering and chiseling technique fully reflects the craftsman's research and thinking on the ergonomics of the vessel. The hammering and chiseling art requires strong realistic ability. Therefore, the learning and inheritance of gold and silver hammering and chiseling techniques are more important. Other skills have certain thresholds in terms of difficulty and acquisition time.
