In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents spirituality and illumination as if floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. Therefore, many deities of Asian religions are depicted as seated on a lotus flower. Zhou Dunyi, a major philosophical thinker of the Northern Song dynasty, regards lotus as "the gentleman among flowers", and admires lotus for its qualities, "I love only the lotus, for rising from the mud yet remaining unstained; bathed by pure currents and yet not seductive." Moreover, the lotus is associated with the fruitfulness of summer, and lotus seed pods symbolize fertility and offspring in Chinese traditional culture.

Here is a series of Chinese lotus paintings. The brushwork is pure and moist, with ink used for chiaroscuro, which creates complementary halos revealing the texture of the plants. Several flowers were done in the "baimiao (白描)" fine ink-line manner, adding to the sense of pure elegance and serenity.
